I’m a self-proclaimed snob. I know I am, and I honestly have no shame about it; however, I can’t say the same for my bank account. While I admittedly only lust after designer bags, Valentino bags weren’t always on my bag-loving radar. A couple of years ago, I swore that Rockstuds just weren’t for me, but you can’t deny their staying power. Each season, Valentino finds new ways to reinvent its signature studs, ensuring they stay both relevant and trendy. I had backtrack a bit on my previous opinions when I fell deeply in love with The Valentino Rockstud Spike Chain Bag.
This shape comes in three sizes. The largest is simply called The Rockstud Spike Chain Bag, while the two smaller sizes are called the medium and the small. We got our hands on a medium Rockstud Spike Chain Bag in red, as well as the largest size in ivory. This line of Rockstud bags is simply stunning all around. In quilted leather with eye-catching details, the bag can be worn over the shoulder or crossbody, but it can also be carried as a top handle. The chain is very easy to remove, and I love how versatile it is.
I found the large to be a little too big to be worn crossbody and preferred it strictly as a top handle, while the medium was perfect no matter how I wore it! This Goldilocks found the medium to be ‘just right’ for me and my daily needs. The medium is an ideal size for a day-to-night bag, while the large works best as a day bag. Either way, one simply cannot go wrong with one of these beauties!
Both sizes feature an interior zip pocket and two slit compartments as well. Both the chain and the top handle are easily removable for maximum versatility—so cool, in my opinion! Overall dimensions for The Medium Rockstud Chain Bag are 9″ x 6.3″ x 2.5″, and it retails for $ 2,795 via Net-a-Porter, while The Rockstud Chain Bag’s dimensions are 11.8″ x 7.9″ x 7.3″ and the retail price is $ 3,195 via Nordstrom.

Most people seem to use tote bags for their airplane carry-ons, and I suppose I can understand why. They’re lightweight, and versatile to arrange, with interiors that can be partitioned out in an endless series of ways. Also, without a top flap or lock, they’re easy to get in and out of, which is important for any bag intended to accompany your through an airport. My problem with totes is that they tend to get heavy, and for heavy bags, I like to have a couple carrying options. With the brand new Louis Vuitton Pernelle Tote, the brand solves exactly that problem.
When I look at the Pernelle, I immediately see a travel bag, although at 17 inches wide, it’s also perfect for the current trend for big bags. It features rolled double top handles for those who prefer to hand or elbow carry, and for hands-free use, the wide should strap allows the bag to be carried comfortably on the shoulder. Louis Vuitton hasn’t provided any information on this new bag’s strap drop yet, but just based on its proportion with the rest of the bag, it appears also long enough to allow the bag to be carried crossbody.
Right now, the bag comes in one size and one material: Taurillon leather, which is thick and supple. All three currently available shades feature a not-quite-tonal logo that’s rather large and may be off-putting to some, but in the black-with-navy colorway specifically, I sort of like it. Check out all three below; the bag is priced at $ 3,650 via Louis Vuitton.

In its new Winter 2017 lookbook, Céline doesn’t beat around the bush on the primary feature of one of its newest bag: the Big Bag is, well, big. And in naming it so, the brand seems to have acknowledged what we predicted a year and a half ago: the trend pendulum has swung from micro-mini bags to their oversized counterparts. Back then, we thought that was a good thing. Now, we’re a little more dubious.
When it comes to bags, functionality should be king. What’s the point of a gorgeous, impeccably made purse if it’s a pain to carry or get into? And at a certain point, doesn’t having the ability to carry everything you own in a bag tip into non-functional territory?
Once upon a time, I was a big bag addict, and until recently, I was ready to go directly back to that way of life. That’s until I started going through my bag storage to get ready to move, though. The more I tried out my beloved big bags of the past, the more they seemed kind of cumbersome, even without anything in them. And filling a big bag is always so tempting; if there’s more space, why clean anything out? Why edit down my belongings while I’m rushing around in the morning if I can just throw a couple more things on top of them?
What I’ve found is that the need to edit is actually a welcome thing in my accessories life; when I choose to carry something big, I usually end up switching back to the smallest bag possible as soon as I get back home. For errands or weekends, I don’t need anything more than my keys, wallet, sunglasses and phone, so why would I choose to lug all that extra bag real estate with only four things bobbing around in the bottom or give myself the opportunity to haul a bunch of stuff I won’t actually use?
For people who need to carry laptops or files, or those who want a purse to double as their baby bag, the big bag resurgence is undoubtedly positive. For the rest of us, if you’re anything like me, they might end up just being an unnecessary temptation you end up not enjoying.
